Chanthaburi, Tak to join in jewellery and gems venture

Tak - Gem sellers in Tak are getting together with jewellery manufacturers in Chanthaburi, with plans to combine their expertise and become more competitive.

Tak governor Chumporn Polrak has already met representatives of the jewellery houses in Chanthaburi and they have discussed the outline of an agreement for the proposed partnership.

Under the plan, Tak and Chanthaburi would be designated a cluster of gem and jewellery producing provinces, benefiting from each other's strengths.

Mr Chumporn said Mae Sot district, which borders Burma, imports gemstones from around the world. It would supply the gems to Chanthaburi, which was home to many of the country's leading jewellery manufacturers. The planned business alliance was a win-win prospect for both provinces, the governor said.

Amnaj Nanthaharn, chairman of the Tak industrial council, said gem traders in Tak must constantly monitor the quality of their gems and keep prices reasonable. The council had employed expert gemologists to ensure the quality remains high and was looking to set up a training centre.

Therdkiat Chinsoranant, Mae Sot municipal mayor, said a partnership would accelerate a drive to elevate Mae Sot's status as a special local administrative zone, which requires approval from the Interior Ministry. The district is the gateway to a healthy and growing trade on the western border with Burma.

Thiti Ekboonyuen, chairman of the gem and jewellery association of Chanthaburi, also backed the plan. He said a training centre would be of great benefit to the industry.
